Asylum Screening Unit

Step 1 Calling the Asylum Screening Unit

You have to phone the Asylum Screening Unit on 020 8196 4524.

The Government – Asylum Screening Unit

The Unit will ask you questions. Be prepared for these questions:

  • what your name and date of birth is
  • if you have leave to remain in the UK – legal permission to be in the UK – and when it runs out
  • if you have a passport
  • if you have a spouse of children with you and who they are

If you have an Immigration Adviser

Tell your adviser to make this call for you. Tell them now if you need an interpreter – someone who speaks your language. The Unit will take your adviser’s details and will get in touch with them from now on. Your adviser will also give you a letter with their details on it called a Letter of Introduction. Make a copy and keep both copies safe. You will need it for the next stage.

If you do not have an Immigration Adviser

Tell the Unit now if you need an interpreter – someone who speaks your language. The Unit will take your phone number and call you back with an interpreter if you asked for one. It can take up to 10 days for them to call you back.

Watch out for this phone call. Pick it up when it comes. Do not ignore it. Make sure you have phone credit so you can take the call. If you do not take the call, the Asylum Screening Unit will close your application. You will have to start again.

If you have leave to remain

You will get an appointment date and time for a Screening Interview. This Interview is Step 2. The interview is:

  • normally within 2 weeks of this phone call;
  • always before your leave to remain runs out;
  • at the Asylum Screening Unit in Croydon.

Choose “Asylum Screening Interview” below.

If you do not have leave to remain

The Unit will ask more questions about what family or friends you have in the UK. Then you will get an appointment date and time for a Screening Interview. This Interview is the next step. The Interview is:

  • normally up to 2 weeks away;
  • always at the Asylum Screening Unit in Croydon.
