Damage caused by repair problems

Do not stop paying your rent if a repair is not done or if it causes damage to your stuff.

Not paying rent just gives your landlord a legal reason to try and evict you.

The courts can make landlords pay compensation for repairs not done when they are your landlords responsibility. You might get compensation for:

  • the cost of fixing a problem when you paid for it to be fixed or
  • repairing damage to your stuff or replacing it or
  • the distress, discomfort or inconvenience of the repair not being done or
  • any illness or serious injury caused by the repair

You can not get Legal Aid if you want to go to court for compensation. Get specialist advice if you want to claim compensation through the court. Choose Find a local adviser below.
