Cannot afford the rent

Take action now. Do not ignore the problem or you will build up rent arrears.

Rent is a ‘priority debt’. Choose Money below for more help with priority debts and rent arrears.

You have 2 options if you cannot afford to pay the rent.

1. Claim help with paying the rent

This is called Housing Benefit. Choose Benefits below for help with this.

If you get Housing Benefit you might also get Discretionary Housing Payment from Brent Council.

2. Look for somewhere cheaper

If you are renting from a private landlord look for a place where the rent is the same as or less than the Local Housing Allowance – LHA.

LHA is the maximum amount of Housing Benefit that can be paid for homes in an area. You might need to claim Housing Benefit in the future even if you don’t need it now.
